I despise silly titles like The Nya Albumet (The New Album), but the tracks that make up Psilodump’s double CD feel, if not flawless all the way through, at least distinctly uplifting and energetic. Behind the name Psilodump is Simon Rahm, a guy who released his first EP back in 2001. That EP landed on the Swiss label Domizil, which focuses on experimental electronic music. Since then, he has released records on Swedish labels Sound of Habib and Q-Records, but today, it’s the Australian label Demon Tea.

In addition, Rahm has managed to remix both Kraftwerk and Slagsmålsklubben, as well as perform live at raves, clubs, and festivals, both in Sweden and abroad. The Nya Albumet features a mix of all kinds of modern, synth-driven, and often danceable music that grooves a lot but also confuses at times. Sometimes it brings to mind The Prodigy, sometimes it’s breakbeat, other times big beat, occasionally more straightforward techno, and sometimes an experimental but always rhythmic mishmash of God-knows-what, with a bit of video game-inspired flipping thrown into the mix.

What’s particularly enjoyable about this album—besides the sharp genre shifts and the ecstatic, pumping energy that often emerges—is that it’s both danceable and highly listenable at the same time. Music like this can easily become unbearably repetitive and dull, but Psilodump has the ability to keep me focused for most of the journey, and that’s not bad.

“It’s rare for such a thoroughly worked‐through Swedish double album to appear—definitely not one filled with lovely breakcore, 8‐bit electro, drum ’n’ bass, and any‐other‐genre‐you‐can‐think‐of-techno at breakneck speed. Even the calmer parts vibrate with restrained power.

Then it’s pedal to the metal again. But it never gets nasty or tiresome the way so much breakcore tends to; it’s fun music with a twinkle in its eye. You never need to feel uneasy, even though Simon ‘Psilodump’ Rahm is going 240.”

Psilodump est le projet d'un jeune suédois d'origine finlandaise qui préfère taire son véritable nom. Petit génie âgé de 21 ans seulement, c'est dès l'âge de 11 ans qu'il commence à manipuler son ordinateur pour en sortir quelques sons. Il prend parfois le nom de J.Panic (notamment pour ses prestations de DJ) mais c'est sous celui de Psilodumputer qu'on le découvre voilà deux ans grâce à la compilation "Micro_Superstarz 2000" (Micromusic/Domizil). La nuance entre Psilodump et Psilodumputer (Psilodump + computer) est importante car lorsqu'il ôte les quatre dernières lettres de son drôle de pseudonyme, notre jeune ami nordique semble avoir tendance à mâtiner ses compositions électro/expérimentales de sonorités techhouse tout de même moins originales que ce son "jeu vidéo" délirant qu'il maîtrise à merveille. "Full Of SID/Microcompo Remixes" (Micromusic/Domizil), sa première vraie sortie individuelle sous le nom de Psilodumputer date de novembre 2001. Énième hommage à la puce sonore du Commodore 64 (le SID), ce disque est composé de deux excellents titres dont l'un (You're So Full Of SID) fait l'objet de trois remixes réalisés par des membres de la communauté virtuelle Micromusic.net (qui était déjà à l'origine de "Micro_Superstarz 2000").
Notre homme qualifie difficilement sa musique car il aime varier les styles, et ses goûts musicaux attestent de cette diversité, puisqu'il apprécie Aphex Twin, Cylob, Kraftwerk, Orbital, Squarepusher mais aussi Die Krupps, Nine Inch Nails ou... Pink Floyd ! Il aime également beaucoup jouer avec son Amiga qu'on peut évidemment inclure parmi ses influences.
Très productif, Psilodump a déjà enregistré en deux ans l'équivalent de 6 albums pour une collection qui devrait finalement en comporter 9 et qui s'intitule "The 476-Series" ; rien n'a encore été édité mais son rêve serait de sortir chaque volume sur un label distinct. En attendant, trois vinyls devraient bientôt voir le jour sur deux labels différents (Random/Sound Of Habib et Q-Records), en plus de sa toute première production sous le nom de Psilodump sortie en avril dernier. "Gamma EP" (Sound Of Habib), c'est le nom de ce disque, est un EP 3 titres (dont le premier morceau utilise un sample du Rockit de Herbie Hancock) qui regroupe tous les ingrédients qui font la "touche" Psilodump, c'est-à-dire une sorte d'alliage IDM/Tech/Bitpop assez novateur et très bien agencé, qui prouve que ce jeune homme devrait aller loin.
En bref, Psilodump pourrait trouver sa place sur un label comme !K7 ou Tresor, mais serait tellement mieux sur Tigerbeat6, Irritant ou A-musik pour ne citer que ceux-là. À bon entendeur...
